The old forge bellows add to the revival of this local skill

If you return on August 11 you will see the continuation of my "Iron-Story" with an object ... very rare.

On the left we see a billboard for free expression.
On the right, a telephone box.
Between the two, a rubbish bin.

Once upon a time there was a metal phone box, sad and dirty, in front of a grey wall on the Rue des Déportés Resistants.

France-Telecom, wishing to integrate its street furniture into the environment, organized a painting competition.

And now, on a beautiful morning in May 1994 the grey cabinet became a blue, opening window on a background of ochre and pink. And, with wisteria falling from the balcony onto a small child's blue vest.

Miracle ? The miracle is greater than you think because, beside this cabinet, 800 students congregate two or four times a day, and in 14 1/2 years there has been NO graffiti to spoil this work of art. Isn't that wonderful ?

Iron is a precious metal, which has become rare and expensive. A group of men have decided to make a collective work of art, to share their knowledge and techniques. To this end, they have collected these iron wheel straps, that are still found on farms.

Here, you see another image of these straps, and wheeled carts with their steel wheels still intact.

If you return on August 8 you will see the continuation of my "Iron-Story".

I was looking for bread at a vending machine on the road to Moisdon.
There was none left.
But on the roadside there were some roses.
I took a photo, quietly and without hurrying.
As I was going home, an old man, walking with his cane, knocked on my car window.
"May I see what you've photographed ?"
"But yes, Sir" , I politely replied, showing him the pictures on my camera.
"I've photographed the roses."
"Ah ? Yet they are not beautiful roses," he said, disconcerted.

They are not beautiful roses?

I knew:
-- Green with envy
-- Blue with cold
-- White with fear, (you know, when you are white with blue fear !)
-- Red with rage, (you know, when you are seized with black anger !)

I am sorry to have discovered such "mistrustful roses."

How do you make a piece of iron red, and into a regular predetermined shape ? By producing a matrix and using a press. In the photo, the man on the left, Bernard Bresnu, explains the process to the others. The press has a principal, central vise, operated by a handle fitted with red balls.

See other photos, and go on August 6 for the remainder of the series (iron-story).
